Step 2 Success

Good Habits 2 Groom

VOLUME 4

So, you've learned the hair cutting techniques with the best of them. You're all ready to hit the pavement and find the perfect salon to begin your career. Right? Wait - not yet!

Of course, learning the necessary techniques is important to your success, but equally important is developing good work habits.

And, as noted author, lecturer and educator Letha Barnes points out in her book, Milady's Master Educator, new stylists have a responsibility to the salon industry's growth and success beyond their own personal gain. In other words, by adopting a positive, professional attitude you not only affect your success, but also help the industry's reputation as a whole.

How can you possibly take that on? Well, you can start by developing good habits now. In doing so, you also will be much more attractive to potential employers when you look for that first salon job.

Getting along with others and being able to get along and communicate with your clients, fellow stylists and employees is very important. We'll share some tips to help you demonstrate your professionalism and Initiative in the salon.

  • Develop good listening skills. This will help you personally as well as professionally. It may seem like common sense, but many people aren't good listeners because they simply do not recognize the value of good listening."
  • Ask permission. Before helping yourself to another stylist's products or tools, ask if it's okay. As the saying goes, "Treat others as you would like to be treated."
  • Pull your own weight. If you're not busy with a client, offer to sweep up for a fellow stylist. Or check the sink to see if any bottles need to be cleaned or if towels need to be folded and put away.
  • Take initiative. Come to work with the intention of putting in a full day's work, regardless of the number of client appointments you have. With that in mind, between clients, pick up a salon trade magazine to learn about industry trends and the business side of the salon. Or, ask the manager if you can do anything to help around the salon. Building these good working habits now will earn you respect in the salon. Fellow stylists will appreciate it and will likely return the positive vibes. Salon managers will notice and your good attitude will be rewarded. It's a win-win situation!
