"At the beginning of their career, it is critical that new stylists focus on learning not earning. To really establish a foothold in the profession, stylists need to be committed to the learning process for the first two or three years. Earning potential comes later."

Charles Penzone owns The Charles Penzone Grand Salons and Day Spas in Columbus, Ohio. Penzone lectures, consults for public and private companies, and serves as Chairman of the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology.

"Here's how to ensure a client comes back to see you: While clients are paying, I tell them I need to see them again in 5 weeks. While I say this, I am nodding my head up and down in the 'yes' motion. The client will usually agree and book their next appointment before they walk out the door. It's an excellent way to build your books!"
