Step 2 Success

Competing A Cut Above

VOLUME 5

Hair Shows. Platform Presentations. Competitors. Cosmetologists who participate in these events tend to be better hair stylists than those who don`t participate, Why?

"You have to devote hours of practice to create the look and the perfect the style before you even attend the competition," Lisa Miller, artistic director of Mr. Johns, Decatur, IL, recently told us. Miller, a platform and cosmetology instructor, explained, "You have to be totally committed to practicing your style and look over until you are confident that you 've created a winning entry. And you do that by taking a basic technique and learning to be creative with it, focusing on the artistic angle of hair styling.

Here's some more winning tips for competing:

  • Find the right model. You need total artistic freedom and time to practice.
  • Be committed. Devote lots of practice time to prepare for the competition.
  • Get support. Your instructor or employer can help plan a timetable and provide a place to practice.
  • Develop a methodical plan. Schedule rehearsal time with your model and assistants; prepare equipment needed for the show and special clothes or makeup for your model. Being organized increases your self-confidence.
  • Have realistic expectations. Don't be disappointed if you aren't a winner. You win by learning from your experiences.

It may sound like a lot of work once you've decided to enter. You're right! But the advantages are many:

  • you refine hairstyling skills
  • you gain self-discipline for a successful career
  • you impress salon owners with your determination
  • you gain recognition and...
  • it's just plain fun!
